In the group stage, Portugal won two matches against Mexico and Iran and drew their match against Angola, finishing at the top of their group with seven points. In the round of 16, Portugal defeated Mexico 2-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, they faced England and the match ended in a 0-0 draw, leading to a penalty shootout which Portugal won 3-1.
In the semifinals, Portugal lost to France by a score of 1-0, and in the third-place match, Portugal lost to Germany 3-1. Despite not winning the tournament, Portugal's performance in the 2006 World Cup was considered one of their best in history, as they reached the semifinals for the first time since 1966. Cristiano Ronaldo, who played for Portugal in the tournament, was also named the Best Young Player of the tournament.
